NOTHING, YET EVERYTHING.

When I was in first year college I used to go to this campus nearby to have picnic alone. University of the Philippines had diverse kind of people and I would bring a little blanket, armed with a good book, pen and paper- just sit there on the sunken garden and observe the life before me. I love people watching and it was quite a treat to go there and do just that. There were singles, couples, families all up and about- people dating, playing football, group rehearsals, reviewing for a class, some just staring blankly into a space, some watching me and some watching people watching me. There were times I caught people looking at me strangely and I loved it. I loved being an enigma. I remember it to be liberating and poignant. There was a kind of joy in solitary moments like these but also that phantom sense of loneliness in solitude. I always thought it would be nice to do with somebody someday. I never had a romantic picnic. Reading a book, people watching, tinkering on something, doing nothing and yet everything with someone you love on a beautiful day- smelling the grass and earth around. Romance is an exquisite gift, ne c’est pas?
